Research Billing Compliance Audit Completed. Now What? – How to turn the Word "AUDIT" into Something Positive!
Wednesday September 18, 2024 11:00am - 11:45am PDT
This session will address common research billing compliance audit findings and the corrective actions and organizational management that may be required to mitigate the identified risks. We will also discuss the potential implications to the organization that may result from an audit demonstrating significant billing errors and documentation deficiencies. The word "Audit" often implies something negative. This session will also explore how to change the narrative in research billing audits and identify opportunities for improving the financial, operational, and reputational outcomes.

  1. Describe common audit findings and discuss which should be prioritized by management (Low dollar/large volume vs. Low volume/large dollars vs. operational).
  2. Discuss management and implementation of corrective actions and distribution of audit results (corrected claims, charge re-direction, insurance/patient refunds).
  3. Discuss the potential implications and impact of audit findings on the organization (operational, reputational, financial)?

Courage to Change: A Process Improvement Story
Wednesday September 18, 2024 12:45pm - 1:30pm PDT
Using process improvement to strengthen Research Billing requires a willingness to identify and correct mistakes in areas ranging from EMR workflow to charges themselves. All stakeholders must be open to taking a look at EMR design and interoperability, CTM data entry, and the claim components. Facilitating communication among all stakeholders from coordinators to executives regarding payor rules and internal process is critical. Methods for tracking, harmonization and keeping up with amendments must be established. Flexibility and stamina is necessary to restructure, recommunicate, and reverse when necessary.

  • Share process improvement journey for effective Research billing compliance.
  • Identifying areas of improvement in billing with support from your organization's process improvement professionals  (we have Lean 6 Sigma through our Quality department, but some organizations use Kaizen or other methods).
  • Designing EMR workflows that support billing and redesigning those that may hinder billing. Lather, rinse, repeat. Get the IT folks at the table and keep them close.
  • Taking a systems/all hands on deck approach to Research billing issues, from Coordinators to VPs. Open the lines for communication.
